The abstract of Dr. Raghavan’s lecture is quoted below :-

“There are several constraints in adopting clean process technologies in developing societies. They include poor technical and fiscal resources, weak regulatory framework, suboptimal R&D capabilities and less prevalent stimulus packages. In order to realise the global potential of Indian leather and chemical sectors, environmental factors have to be tackled on war footing.

The historical evolution of green concepts is based on shifting global environmental protection priorities. The waste reduction investments in various industrial sectors in developed countries show the importance of liquid and solid waste management in leather sector. In recent years, India has made outstanding achievements in clean leather processing. These achievements are reviewed.

The zero emission concept is gaining prominence to minimize ecofootprint on the environment and material / energy inputs to the manufacturing industry. The recent Indian initiatives on zero liquid discharge are highlighted and the Indian leadership in his field is imminent. The concepts of recycle and reuse from scientific viewpoint provide several challenges to be overcome. They are discussed.

The environmental strategies for leather product and chemical auxiliaries sectors are quite different in terms of technologies solutions. An attempt is made to highlight these distinctions and technological challenges to overcome them”.

The lecture was truly outstanding and a memorable one. People thoroughly enjoyed the lecture. The breadth of the lecture in terms of the area it covered and its depth in terms of its potential to change the perception of the industry were remarkable.
